A Selective Service Reminder

    The law says that all 18-year-old young men must register. Not only is this the law, failing to register prevents students from receiving any federal grants or loans for post secondary training.

    Registering is very easy. Go online at www.sss.gov. The whole process takes almost two minutes. If you prefer, you can go to the local post office and complete the registration form.

U.S. Bank Scholarships

    U.S. Bank will award up to thirty $1000 scholarships to seniors planning to attend 2-yr or 4-yr college full time next fall. Scholarship award recipients are selected through a random drawing process.

    Students can apply online at www.usbank.com/studentbanking 

    Scholarship applications will be accepted through February. (Entering may generate advertising.)

KACRAO Leadership Scholarship

    The Kansas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers is offering four scholarship of $500 each.  The scholarships are not need based. Application criteria are 3.25 GPA, ACT of at least 22 or SAT of 1020, evidence of leadership experience, and plan to attend a KACRAO institution next year. Most Kansas colleges and some technical schools are members of KACRAO. The details and the simple application are available from the Counseling Office or it can be found at www.kacrao.org. Deadline March 15th.

ESA Foundation Scholarship

    The ESA Foundation is awarding at least 30 scholarships that Kansas residents qualify for. Values range from $400 to $1000. Must plan to attend college or vocational training. Must meet one of the following criteria: 3.0 cumulative GPA, or score at least 22 on the ACT.    

    Applications are available from the Counseling Office or can be downloaded a www.esaintl.com/esaf. The application looks complicated but is not bad. Just be sure to follow all instructions. Deadline February 1st.

The Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

    Completing the FAFSA is a required step in applying for most types of financial aid from all Kansas colleges, public vo-tech schools, some private trade schools and most out of state college/schools. The FAFSA allows you to apply for grants, loans, work-study, and needed-based scholarships. You are encouraged to file the FAFSA  electronically or mail it by mid-February in order to meet the financial aid priority deadlines of many schools. FAFSA application packets are available are from the Counseling Office.

    Also, Seniors and Parents, plan to complete your tax forms early (even if you don't wish to mail them until April 15), as information from the income tax forms is used in filling out the FAFSA form. Additionally, the majority of financial aid office will eventually ask for a signed cannot complete your income tax by mid-February, you are allowed to estimate the required information on the financial aid form. If you estimate, though, you can definitely expect to be later asked for verification information.

Kansas Vocational Education Scholarships

    Up to 250 scholarships worth $500 each are available to students who plan to enroll in designated one or two year vocational programs. Designated programs are located at various Kansas area technical schools, community colleges, Kansas State University-Salina, several four-year colleges and proprietary schools. Typically, any program that requires less than a bachelor's degree is eligible. (Ex. One and two year programs as well as those like radiology technology).

    To apply for one of the scholarships, interested students must simply take a vocational aptitude lest on March 1 if they did not already take it. These scholarships are not based on grades or financial need.

Youth Pursuing Careers in Agriculture

College Scholarships will be available in 2008 for 100 Farm Youth Pursuing Careers in Agriculture by Monsanto Company. More information and application will be available at: www.nafb.com and www.monsanto.com. The deadline for online application submission will be on February 15, 2008. 

Farm Credit of Western Kansas, ACA Scholarship

The Farm Credit of Western Kansas is providing $500.00, 4-year renewable scholarship only available to the children of members of Farm Credit of Western Kansas. Requirements for the scholarship are:

  • Maintain at least a 2.5 GPA
  • Takes 12 or more credit hours per semester
  • Provide Western Kansas Farm Credit with an official transcript showing their cumulative GPA and credits earned to date on or before August 1 and January 5 of the current academic year.

All scholarship applicants must be postmarked no later than February 15, 2008.

The 2008 Burger King Scholarship Program

The $1,000 scholarship is available to all high school seniors. Last day to submit applications is February 15, 2008. For more information log on at www.bk.com/scholars.

High Plains Phi Delta Kappa

The PDK International and the PDK Educational Foundation will award 30 to 40 prospective educators with the Phi Delta Kappa's 2008 Scholarship.The number and amount of the awards vary each year, ranging from $500 to a renewable award totaling $5,000 over four years. For more information log on at www.pdkintl.com. Deadline February 20, 2008. 

Jim Johnson Scholarship

The High Plains Chapter of the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association awards a $500 scholarship to a high school senior who will be pursuing a career in of the physical sciences (e.g. Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, Earth Science including geology, hydrology, meteorology, oceanography, and soil science).The scholarship is also open to those going into the teaching profession in the physical sciences. Specifics of the scholarship application process are listed below:

  • Applicants will need to provide proof of acceptance to a college with a physical science major
  • Applicant will write a one page essay stating what they plan to do in the physical sciences once they receive the degree and ho it will contribute to their discipline. The format of the essay should be 12 point font, double spaced.
  • Applicants deadline is April 1, 2008.
  • Scholarship will be awarded May 1, 2008
  • Scholarship is non-renewable ( it is only for one year)

Midwest Energy Scholarship

Midwest Energy is looking for five students interested in an all-expense paid educational trip to Washington D.C. June 12-19, 2008. The students must be juniors in High School and their parents or guardians must receive electric or natural gas service form Midwest Energy. Enclosed applications will be sent to the high school counselors, also applications may also be obtained from the Midwest Energy website at www.mwenergy.com. Deadline March 14, 2008.

Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year

The SAMMY 2008 Award Program is awarding on of the 25 high school winners with a $7,500 college scholarship for the Milk Processor Education Program.

Judging is based on the following: academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership, community service. A panel of celebrity athletes including Andy Roddick, Steve Nash, Mia Hamm, Michelle Kwan, and Tony Hawk will help select this year's 25 National Scholar Athletes.
