Schools Awarded for Academic Excellence
November 28, 2007
Wallace County USD 241 and Weskan USD 242 received identical state-level awards for academic excellence this week.
The plaque received by the superintendent of each district reads, "The Kansas Board of Education presents the Governor's Achievement Award for the 2006-2007 to (Wallace County High School, Weskan High School) for receiving Building Level Standards of Excellence in both reading and math, meeting AYP requirements, and being in the top 5% of High Schools."
"This is an unbelievable honor for the students in Wallace County and speaks to the level of education in both our school districts," said Mike Nulton, USD 242 superintendent. "Only 19 high schools in Kansas receive this award."
"With all our excitement about state football this week, I am even more excited about this academic honor!" echoed USD 241 superintendent Larry Lysell. "To continue meeting No Child Left behind's Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standards and to be in the top 5% of the schools in the state of Kansas is just amazing! And this is competition with everyone, not just small, rural schools."
Nulton continued, "This speaks well first of all for the teachers in both districts, but also the school boards, administrators and staff that have critical roles in the overall performance of our students."
Lysell, said "Those who think small schools can't compete clearly haven't seen what we are doing out here!"
