Honoring Our Veterans

by Danica Cox

November 14, 2007

On Thursday, November 8th the Weskan School celebrated Veterans Day. The celebration began at 10:45 a.m. with the theme for the day being “We Celebrate America”. To begin the program, the Goodland National Guard did the Presentation of Colors and Mr. Thompson read a poem entitled “I Am An American”. The Daughters of the American Revolution then presented the school with a flag that was flown at the US Capitol on June 7, 2007. Throughout the program, each class put something together to honor the Veterans, from original poems to different songs. The speech class performed two different poems for the Veterans called “A Soldiers Contribution” and “Because of You”. While they recited their poems, they were accompanied by background music written and performed by Alicia. and Savannah N. A standout performance for the program was “In Flanders Fields” performed by the High School choir. Savannah N. and Tanner N. opened the piece with a short duet. The speech class created a slideshow presentation of pictures to accompany the song, which proved to be a powerful performance, leaving barely a dry eye in the gym. The program ended with the Retiring of Colors. A lunch was prepared for the Veterans and served by the speech class and NHS students. The students got a chance to mingle with the 28 Veterans in attendance and visit with them. Overall, the day was a great celebration honoring the Veterans.
