Another Successful Night of Comedy

Raney O.

November 14, 2007

Beginning a new tradition, the Weskan High School performed a set of four plays on Saturday, November 10. The play cast showed up ready to give the audience a night to remember. This was the first night the Weskan cast has ever done a Quartet of Comedy and many of the members were pleased with the results. The plays were practiced separately causing an added suspense for even the other cast members on Saturday.

The first play was a melodrama called “He Lured Her to the Primrose Path but He was Nipped in the Bud”. The story told of Sidney Shift (Drew F.) who was using profits from fraudulent dealings with the cavalry to live grandly at the White Hotel (Owned by Grandma White, Brynne H.) in Muddy Gap. Here he pursues the heroine Alice White (Elizabeth H.), but she is loyal to the cavalry, especially to private Will Dew (Will H.), the hero. Charity Costs (Andrea K.) decides to help Sidney Shift with his scheme by luring Alice into the deal. Alice reluctantly agrees to marry Shift, unwittingly aiding his plot to seize the hotel. With the help of all the characters and Mrs. Handy (Payton W.), they stop Shift and arrest him with the help of Lieutenant U. Sless (Nathan M.).

The next play was a short skit consisting of only a few cast members. This skit was called “Rent-a-car” and told the story of a strong competition between two rival car rental companies giving a new meaning to the words “being competitive”. The play was set in an airport with voice overs naming arriving and departing planes provided by Drew F. Lucy (Sheena S.) and Carol (Raney O.) came out immediately showing their competitive spirits when Harvey (Joey K.), a customer and Carol’s father returned the keys to Lucy for the car he rented from her instead of his own daughter. Then, when another customer, Tim (Matt K.), arrived the fight became even more fierce. The ladies continued to argue over Tim until they broke out into an arm wrestling match. Then, bus driver (Genevieve H.) offered other means of transportation. Giving up on the car rental companies, Tim gladly accepted.

The third play was also a skit called “Bogeyman and the Golf Course”. The cast of this skit began by singing a song about the game of golf. After their song and dance the Pro (Breanna H.) began her class, teaching students about the game of Golf. Unfortunately the game wasn’t quite what they had in mind. The overall theme of the skit was a play on words containing misinterpretations of many golfing terms, such as tee, par, sand traps, iron, and bogey. This resulted in an empty classroom for our golfing pro. To complete this cast of students were Genevieve H., Deanna H., Nathan M., Eliana C., Payton W., Joey K., and Andrea K.

The final play was a melodrama called “The Miner’s Daughter”. The plot of the story began when the villain, Jackpot Slade (Emma C.), tried to take over Barney McDougle’s (Kayla L.) gold mine. He attempted to remove McDougle by means of poison, which was mistakenly consumed by Tillie Bittle (Deanna H.), a visiting temperance worker. Then, when Billie Tittle (Breanna H.) finds her dead, she runs to find Sherriff Harold Strongheart (Zach H.). He appears on the scene to investigate the crime and together with the heroine and daughter of Barney McDougle, Clementine McDougle (Savannah N.), they uncover the evidence that pins the crime on the villain who is, of course, foiled again. Following this melodrama, the cast of “The Miner’s Daughter” performed bloopers, which left the audience overcome with laughter.
